The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will test bridges entered into its 14th Annual Bridge Building Competition on Thursday, November 16 at Rose Theater, located at Southeast Missouri State University’s Grauel Building in Cape Girardeau. Doors will open at 8 am, with the competition beginning at 9 am and concluding at approximately 2 pm.

The competition challenges high school juniors and seniors to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials—15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.

Prizes donated by area organizations will be awarded to the top-five bridge building winners, as well as for the most aesthetic bridge and the electronic bridge building contest. Similar to previous years, cash prizes donated by the SE Chapter Transportation Employee Association of Missouri will be given to the top three schools with the best overall performance.

JAZZ BAND PERFORMS AT BUNKER TODAY

Ian Abrams, Cassie Edwards, Hannah Johnson, Lily Kintz, Andie Cravens-Knott, Jack Lancaster, and Makenzie Lancaster will be participating in the BRL Jazz Band on Thursday, November 16 at Bunker.

With much activity in the music department recently, CHS Music Director Dana Buxton has provided the following highlights:

Mason German and Amaya Keele attended the Quad State Choral Festival in Murray Kentucky November 6-7. They performed the Schubert Mass in G. Mason auditioned for and sang two duets with members of the Murray State Choir.

The same weekend, Mia Gayle had a leading role in Once upon a Mattress, a musical at TRC.

Mason German and Andie Cravens-Knott are members of the TRC Community Band and were in concert on November 8.

Mia Gayle, Mason German, Gage Hunden, Amaya Keele, and K’ylnn Serad were selected for the Southeast Missouri All-District Choir. They performed on November 11 at Cape Central High School.

Christmas Activities: The Marching Band will be performing in Piedmont’s Christmas Parade on December 1. Choir groups will be singing at the community tree lighting on the same evening. The CHS Christmas Concert will be December 12.

Mason German was selected for All-State Choir as a First Alternate for Tenor.  He will practice as if he is a member.  If he moves up, he will perform with the choir during the 2018 Missouri Music Educators Association Convention, January 24-27, at Tan-Tar-A. Mason will also be performing at the Southeast Missouri All-District Band Saturday November 18 and will audition for All-State Band on December 2, also at Tan-Tar-A. If selected for both All State Choir and All State Band, he will have to choose, as students cannot be a member of both.
